Chile’s in-house legal community is navigating a period of significant change. The 2026 edition of the Legal 500 GC Powerlist: Chile reflects a profession that is becoming increasingly strategic, while responding to new regulation, technological change and a more complex business environment.
One theme came through particularly strongly in this year’s research: legal is no longer simply a function that businesses turn to when a problem arises. Pía Fertilio Olmos, legal and regulatory affairs director at Coca-Cola Andina, describes this evolution clearly, with the general counsel increasingly acting as a strategic business partner. Across this year’s Powerlist, we saw legal teams becoming more involved in business decisions from the outset, helping organisations understand risk while also identifying opportunities.
Technology is another major priority among this year’s powerlisters. Chile’s new data protection framework, cybersecurity requirements and increasing reliance on AI creating new responsibilities for in-house teams. Roxana Segura Farías, legal director at Adidas Chile, highlighted the work involved in preparing for the implementation of the country’s new Personal Data Protection Law, alongside the growing role of AI within the legal function. The challenge for counsel is now understanding new technology while ensuring that innovation develops within the appropriate legal and governance frameworks.
For many GCs, like Ximena Santibáñez, vice president of legal and corporate security and general counsel at Walmart Chile, AI also represents an opportunity to rethink how legal teams work. Rather than replacing lawyers, she sees technology as a way to reduce repetitive work and allow them to focus more on “judgment, negotiation, strategic advice and anticipating risk”. It is a perspective that reflects a wider shift in the profession: as technology takes on more routine tasks, the human side of legal leadership becomes even more important.
These conversations capture much of what stood out to us during this year’s research. The Chilean legal function is becoming more embedded in the business, more forward-looking and increasingly connected to issues well beyond traditional legal advice.
