Career Biography
Throughout my career as General Counsel of Camanchaca, I have witnessed the role of the General Counsel evolve from that of a traditional legal adviser into a strategic business partner operating at the intersection of law, technology, sustainability, corporate governance and risk management. Today, in-house counsel are expected not only to interpret the law but also to help build and preserve the trust that companies earn from shareholders, regulators, investors and society. For a publicly listed company operating in the fishing and aquaculture industry—an industry subject to continuous regulatory oversight and public scrutiny—that trust increasingly depends on the ability to demonstrate not only what decisions are made, but how they are made and the level of diligence with which legal, environmental and governance obligations are fulfilled.
One of the most significant opportunities and challenges I foresee for the coming years lies in the convergence of artificial intelligence, digital technologies and sustainability. Most corporate activities today—including regulatory reporting, environmental compliance, communications with public authorities, responses to inspections and internal decision-making processes—are carried out through digital platforms that generate an increasingly comprehensive record of corporate conduct. This digital transformation is fundamentally reshaping the way compliance is assessed.
It is no longer sufficient to demonstrate that an obligation has been fulfilled; companies will increasingly be expected to evidence, through objective and verifiable records, the timeliness, consistency, quality and diligence with which information has been generated, reviewed, preserved and disclosed. I believe artificial intelligence will become a key enabler in this evolution—not by replacing legal judgment, but by enhancing our ability to organize complex information, identify inconsistencies, anticipate legal and compliance risks, strengthen data governance and properly document corporate decision-making.
Ultimately, the legal defence of companies will depend not only on the quality of their legal arguments but also on the integrity and reliability of the digital evidence demonstrating responsible corporate conduct. The ability to transform corporate information into credible, transparent and traceable evidence for regulators, courts and society will become one of the defining capabilities of the legal function.
At the same time, businesses operate in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment shaped by armed conflicts, shifting trade policies, evolving tariffs, supply chain disruptions and rapidly changing regulatory expectations. In such an environment, I believe that one of the greatest competitive advantages any organization can develop is strategic flexibility.
At Camanchaca, we understand flexibility not only as the ability to diversify products or expand into different markets, but also as the capacity to adapt our decision-making processes, our engagement with regulators and stakeholders, and our corporate responses to constantly evolving circumstances. The legal function is an essential part of that adaptability. Our role is to deliver timely, technically sound and business-oriented solutions while safeguarding ethics, transparency and regulatory compliance.
Looking ahead, I am convinced that the General Counsel of the future will be distinguished not only by legal excellence, but also by the ability to integrate artificial intelligence, technology, sustainability and strategic thinking into a coherent framework that enables organizations to become more resilient, transparent and better prepared to navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain world.
