Career Biography

Chief corporate affairs and chief legal officer at WOM, one of the main players in the Chilean telecommunications industry. María Paz joined WOM in July 2025 and has responsibility over legal, regulatory, compliance and public affairs. In WOM she has secured the execution of material agreements with the State of Chile which have enabled the continuity of the development of one of the largest telecommunications networks in Chile.

Prior to joining WOM María Paz was Chief Legal Officer of AES Andes, where she led the legal strategy and corporate governance for AES in the Andes region including Chile, Colombia and Argentina, which enabled the transformation of AES Andes into a primarily renewable energy generator. She also served on the boards of directors of AES Corporation subsidiaries in Colombia, Brazil and El Salvador, as well as subsidiaries in Chile where AES participated in joint ventures with non-related companies. María Paz has also served on the boards of other private and publicly traded companies, non-profit organizations and trade associations in Chile and Latin America. She has also participated in private and public working groups and committees focusing on corporate governance, energy, water desalination, telecommunications and project development. Previously, she was general manager of MPX Chile Holding , where she previously served as legal director. She previously practiced law at the firms Carey y Cía., Bofill Mir & Alvarez Jana, and Baker & McKenzie.

She has been awarded among the 100 women leaders of Chile by El Mercurio and Mujeres Empresarias; considered The Legal 500, Chambers and Best Lawyers among the most relevant lawyers in Chile in energy and natural resources, among the best and most influential in-house lawyers in Chile and Latin America, and among the most relevant women leaders in telecommunications.

Since 2020 she has chaired or acted as vice-president of the Corporación Educacional Alianza Francesa de Santiago (elected to the Board by Alliance Française Paris-Ile de France). The Corporación owns the Alliance Française de Santiago-Lycée Antoine de Saint Exupéry school, one of the largest schools outside of France with convention with  the Agence pour l’Enseignement du Français à l’Étranger, public operator supervised by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, that  coordinates the network of French language schools outside France.

Since 2023 she is a member of the ICARE Circulo Legal.

In 2025 she was elected as member of the mediation corps of the Arbitration and Mediation Center of the Santiago Chamber of Commerce.

In 2026 María Paz resumed teaching activities in matters related to corporate law and corporate governance.

Since 2017, she has been a mentor at WoomUp, an organization dedicated to empowering women in both the public and private sectors to advance professionally.

María Paz graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She holds other diplomas and certifications in matters related to board member qualifications, energy, business law, mediation and arbitration.
