For 29 years, The Legal 500 has been analysing the capabilities of law firms across the world. The GC Powerlist is the latest publication from The Legal 500, turning its attention to the in-house function, and recognising those corporate counsel who are driving the legal business forward. The latest edition is the GC Powerlist: Turkey Teams, which identifies an array of the most influential and innovative in-house teams working in Turkey….read more

Our commitment to the in-house market is expanding, not only through the publication of the GC Powerlist Series, but also with our wide range of events, seminars, roundtables and legal updates. We have also launched GC Magazine, a quarterly title (free of charge to in-house counsel) that looks at the business of being an in-house lawyer, from a strategic, commercial and theoretical standpoint. We understand that the biggest issues facing in-house counsel today are, in fact, rarely legal issues. Our editor-in-chief, Catherine McGregor is now based in the United States and is travelling the length and breadth of the country to meet, interview, analyse and finally share the very best that the in-house market has to offer.

If you have feedback on the GC Powerlist: Turkey Teams, or wish to nominate other in-house individuals (either in Turkey region or global), please do get in touch at corporatecounsel@legal500.com.

We hope that this listing will stimulate debate around the role of the in-house lawyer and help corporate counsel with possible improvements and efficiencies in running their departments.

Esin Attorney Partnership, A member firm of Baker & McKenzie

Esin Attorney Partnership, A member firm of Baker & McKenzie logo

We are delighted to sponsor The Legal 500’s GC Powerlist for Turkey once again. Congratulations to everyone who made this year’s list.

Over the past years, the role of the general counsel has shifted from the back seat to a specialised and influential business steering role. General counsels are expected to combine legal knowledge with practical commercial solutions, and never has this skill been more necessary than now, in the aftermath of July’s recent coup attempt. We are pleased that the coup attempt was unsuccessful and that this terrible event had the positive effect of unifying the people of Turkey in support of its democratic foundations.

Recent events exposed the extent to which Gülenist networks have undermined certain business sectors with illegal practices and unfair competition. The legal sector was one such sector, and the return of proper transparency and ethics is a welcome boom to our profession. We are relieved to see that gone are the days when a law firm reached success by selling its dubious connections rather than its legal acumen. Unfortunately, many companies are now suffering the consequences of such law firms’ past unscrupulous behavior. Since day one, we have been committed to propriety and integrity in developing our relationships; days like these prove the importance and value of our approach.

Consequently, the procurement of legal services is becoming increasingly more diverse and complex as legal service becomes less of a commodity. Necessity is driving general counsels to prioritise legal certainty, quality and expertise over exclusively price-driven considerations.

We have addressed the growing need for dynamic, innovative and business-savvy lawyers by establishing a strong and ethical law firm that delivers high quality work. We have accomplished this over many years of committed team-building, rather than relying on a small number of star players. Investing in our work force and practice areas increased the quality of our services, and as a result, our firm has grown to employ more than 90 people this past year.

As a full-service law firm, we offer legal advice in all practice areas. Our compliance and anti-bribery practice in particular have been very busy after the coup attempt. Our highly specialised ITC and data protection team has provided several crucial data protection trainings to our clients, while our capital markets team handled three IPOs this year.

Finally, our goal is to elevate the legal profession into the most progressive and rewarding career path. We continue to give back to our community, most prominently through the efforts of our Diversity Committee, which continues to actively lead collaborative efforts to promote awareness of gender, ethnic, disability, and diversity issues. This year we held a panel, “LGBTI in the Workplace,” followed by cocktails to commemorate Pride Week and once again displayed the LGBTI flag on our office building for the entire week. Friends, colleagues and clients attended the panel to discuss the common issues faced in the professional environment and how employers and employees can become supportive allies to our LGBTI colleagues. Many of our lawyers and staff continue to participate in our firm’s pro bono initiatives supporting C@rma, Yenidenbiz, PILnet, and other organisations. We are excited to continue partnering with our clients and colleagues to work for our community.

In addition to our commitment to diversity and community, we are also committed to our employees. To this end, we will soon be rolling out a program to let our lawyers work from their homes without coming to the office. We hope that this incentive will allow our lawyers to balance their private life with their careers. We continue to provide opportunities for training and secondments to all of our lawyers throughout their careers.

Our dedication to the legal profession extends to our clients and with this sponsorship of the The Legal 500’s GC Powerlist, we hope to draw attention to the great work being done by in-house teams, and the contributions that you make to your respective companies which extend well beyond the legal function.

GC Summit Portugal 2024

On April 9th, The Legal 500 was delighted to be back in Lisbon, hosting the GC Summit Portugal 2024 at the EPIC SANA Lisboa Hotel. The event convened the nation’s in-house legal community alongside five leading law firms and 20 esteemed speakers, providing a platform for the highest calibre of legal expertise to examine pressing issues faced by corporate counsel.

The conference kicked off with opening remarks from Francisco Castro, The Legal 500’s editorial lead, underscoring the significance of uniting the in-house community and collaborating with law firms to deliver top-notch content tailored to their interests.

The first panel, in collaboration with Abreu Advogados, brought the topic of Intellectual Property to the forefront. César Bessa Monteiro Jr., partner at Abreu Advogados moderated a discussion with Sara Barbot, legal director at BA Glass, Pedro Gonçalves, director of legal and compliance at Unbabel and Rita Branquinho Lobo, head of legal affairs at Novabase. The session explored challenges companies encounter in safeguarding their rights and sharing intangible assets in collaborative endeavours.

The subsequent session, brought by CMS Portugal, with esteemed speakers Bernardo Cunha Ferreira, partner at CMS Portugal, Pedro Amaral Frazão, adviser to the chairman at Grupo Sousa, Tiago de Magalhães, senior associate at CMS Portugal and Sandro dos Santos Zeineddin, director of information systems at Portway, delved into the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI), exploring innovative strategies and cutting-edge technologies reshaping the corporate landscape.

After a short coffee break to exchange ideas on the topics discussed, the third panel of the afternoon, in collaboration with Morais Leitão, introduced the firm’s ML Assessment.ai, the firm’s innovative approach to navigate the complexities of the legal landscape, through AI-driven solutions. The session was moderated by Magda Viçoso, partner at Morais Leitão and Carlos Coelho, director of innovation and knowledge at Morais Leitão, alongside guest speakers Bruno Pina, chief legal officer at Repsol and Ana Moniz Macedo, director of corporate affairs at Millennium BCP.

The session that followed, brought by VdA, focused on the Voluntary Carbon Markets newest legislation, both at the Portuguese and the EU levels, which brings new opportunities to, among others, create financial products on the grounds of bold carbon credits. The discussion was led by Assunção Cristas, partner, ESG integrated services platform and the environment at VdA, Hugo Moredo Santos, partner, banking & finance at VdA, Patrícia Mendes, head of legal and compliance at Volkswagen Financial Services and Angela Lucas, co-founder, partner & board member at LAND Fund.
