With revenues of around $3bn a year, Demirören Group is one of Turkey’s largest conglomerates, operating in a range of sectors but with a particular focus on energy, tourism, residential project investments, port management, construction, media, and education. Its subsidiary Milangaz is the country’s leading liquefied petroleum gas supplier. After successful stints at some of Turkey’s biggest companies, Murat Durmaz has been head of legal affairs at Demirören since April 2015. The legal team proved the value of their work during a busy period for Demirören. The team advised on a joint venture acquisition where, with partner Karacan Group, they acquired Dogan Holding’s Milliyet and Vatan newspapers. In the same year they signed a deal to sponsor the Beşiktaş men’s basketball team. In September 2015, the legal team moved quickly to negotiate and finalise the company’s acquisition of French oil company Total’s distribution operation and gas stations in Turkey in a deal worth €325m.
