Producing over 3 million tonnes of steel a year, İçdaş is one of the world’s biggest steel producers. While demand for the commodity has fallen in recent months, İçdaş has managed to avoid many of the problems faced by its competitors. This has been in no small part the result of its solid risk management strategy, driven by the legal team. The company is also expanding its operations in a bid to capitalise on a market rebound, and is currently building $700m blast furnace in Canakkale, Western Turkey, that will boast a capacity of two million metric tonnes a year. The legal team was closely involved in this matter, from sourcing land permits, executing contracts to secure the site and negotiating contracts with suppliers. In February 2015, İçdaş concluded a contract with US multinational conglomerate General Electric to install 19 new wind turbine units. The deal, crucial to Turkish government plans of increasing wind power capacity to 20,000 MW by 2023, required the lawyers to align many complex pieces and was praised highly by one private practice nominator as, ‘one of the standout pieces of work carried out in the past year in the Turkish market.’
