Established in 1992, Porland Porselen is now a leading Turkish porcelain manufacturer. Legal affairs manager Tuna Yasin Doyuk spearheads the legal team which she built in 2014. The team participates in every single process and subject relevant to both the company and judicial process. As Doyuk notes ‘there has been a perception in the company that if the law is essential for all divisions of the company, every decision has to be confirmed by the legal team. Thus, written consent of the legal division has been stipulated’. Much more than this the team goes the extra mile by regularly training the company’s directors on necessary legal amendments, and support internal company training sessions on subjects such as quality management, business continuity, information assurance, environmental management, ethics and compliance. The team skilfully implemented recent minimum wage legislation, limiting its impact on the company’s collective agreement with its employees. The legislation, which gave workers a right to a 31% pay rise had the potential of collapsing the company. The legal team’s management of the change not only avoided infraction of the contact, but maintained labour continuity by preventing redundancies. In unstable political jurisdictions with the capacity to impact legislation and therefore company strategy, Doyuk has focused the team on producing powerful contracts, drawn up incisively to facilitate company growth targets. Explaining the team ethos Doyuk adds that ‘you need to understand the business and to be there as an advisor who is helpful to get the business things done, as opposed to being a roadblock’.
