When PayPal exited the Turkish market after it was refused a licence to operate, eBay lost its most popular method of customer payment, necessitating a change in its business model and a wider scope for its legal team. ‘It is broader than before now. For instance, we are more into the government relations, intellectual property and litigation matters’, says Yilmaz. Despite Turkish buyers needing alternative payment methods to buy goods, which most eBay sellers simply do not offer, the legal department’s strategic contribution in this and other areas has, according to one source, ‘saved the parent company millions of dollars’. The team tackles the rapidly changing regulatory framework, as well as domestic and international political crises as it aligns to the company objective of expanding the business whilst managing risk.
