Kerem Morali, chief legal counsel, leads the legal team of six lawyers and one non-lawyer at Fiba Group, an investment company with a portfolio of high-value brand names in both financial and non-financial sectors. The in-house lawyers of some its main subsidiaries have recently been added to the group legal team, creating a synergy between the holding company and its subsidiaries. Demonstrating this synergy, the team is deeply involved in all new deals in a broad range of sectors while working with various business teams in the group of companies to provide consistency throughout the deals of the group. ‘This involvement and the commercial acumen of the legal team have ensured that the legal department is now not just a support group, but an important part of the decision making process’, says deputy chief legal counsel, Elif Hallam. To continue its close working relationship with the CEO and the senior management, being a part of the discussions and thought-processes regarding both strategic decisions has been essential. Keeping up to date with changes in the country, the team was required to go through an extensive training period that consisted of internal discussion sessions, training sessions with professors and attending related panels and seminars following drastic changes to the Turkish Code of Obligations and the Turkish Commercial Code, the two main codes regulating Turkish business life.
