Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

Our legal team has implemented various innovations that have significantly enhanced our efficiency, productivity, and customer service. For example, we have implemented the following two technological improvements that did not come at a high cost:

We have implemented a contract management software that stores all our contracts in a digital format. This makes it easy to search for and access contracts, track the status of each contract, and set reminders for when they are due to expire. The software also has an electronic signature feature, which eliminates the need to print and sign contracts.

We are customising a software platform for real-time tracking of all the company’s lawsuits. This will give us complete visibility of progress and ensure that each case is tracked in the most optimised way possible.

These improvements have saved us time and money, improved our efficiency, and enhanced our overall customer service. We firmly believe that we should always look for ways to improve our processes and find new ways to serve our clients. We view innovation as an indispensable element for the success of any legal team.

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?

The role of general counsel is undergoing continuous change as the legal landscape evolves. One of the most notable developments in recent years has been the increasing reliance on technology by general counsel. This trend is expected to gain further momentum in the coming years, driven by advancements in technology and its growing affordability.

Technology plays a pivotal role in enabling general counsel to automate tasks, ensure compliance, and enhance decision-making processes. For instance, Artificial Intelligence (AI) can swiftly translate documents, draft and review contracts, and conduct legal research. This automation allows lawyers to dedicate their time to more intricate and strategic matters.

Undoubtedly, the adoption of legal technology presents certain challenges. Concerns surrounding data security and the ethical implications of AI usage in the legal profession persist. However, by establishing and implementing Responsible AI guidelines, policies, and checklists to regulate its use and ensure ethicality, fairness, transparency, and accountability, the benefits of leveraging legal technology outweigh the associated risks.

Overall, the future of general counsel work will be shaped by advancements in technology, and those who adapt to these changes will have a competitive edge in the evolving legal landscape.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

At FEMSA Proximity, we prioritise diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplace. Embracing diversity enriches our company and creates an environment where everyone feels welcome and appreciated. We celebrate the creativity and innovation that diversity fuels, and we are confident that inclusion strengthens our organisation.

A notable example of our commitment is the implementation of a program for hiring refugees in our stores in Mexico, making FEMSA one of the pioneers in Latin America to adopt such an initiative. As the Legal team, we played a crucial role in obtaining the necessary authorisations for the program and designed robust internal policies to ensure legal compliance from its inception and throughout its duration. These measures provide the necessary mechanisms and protocols for the successful implementation of the programme.

In terms of our department, our legal team exemplifies our belief in the value of diversity. With 53.4% women and 48.8% men, and most women in leadership positions, our department showcases the power of diversity. This diverse composition ignites our creativity and fosters innovation.

At FEMSA Proximity, we remain firmly committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace.
