Focus on….Our legal team

Citi is a global bank operating in over 160 countries and jurisdictions, serving more than 200 million customers, and Citi’s Markets division sits within the Institutional Clients Group, providing world-class products and financing solutions for corporations, governments, and institutional investors through Citi’s market leading underwriting, sales and trading, and distribution capabilities.

The EMEA FX and Local Market Rates Legal team (EMEA FX & LMR Legal) support Citi Markets’ Global Currencies Business and Local Market Rates business. Both are premier Citi franchises, recognised as global first tier, award winning and market leading businesses with broad geographic footprints, sophisticated electronic and algorithmic trading divisions, and mature e-commerce teams and several internal joint ventures supporting custody and cash businesses. The businesses face all counterparty types and with the broadest of offerings that includes but is not limited to hedging structures, corporate derivatives, FX prime brokerage, proprietary and third-party trading and electronic platforms, index and benchmark linked transaction, product linked issuances and vanilla and exotic derivatives.

EMEA FX & LMR Legal provides advice to business and functional colleagues in support of business objectives while identifying, managing, and mitigating Citi’s legal, regulatory, and reputational risks. They support governance forums and legal entity management with respect to global booking vehicles with particular focus on those located in Europe, Middle East, and Africa. They are required to advise on the effective origination of new business, the management of governance and franchise risk and act as trusted advisors to sales, trading, and business support functions. As providers of strategic advice on legal and regulatory requirements and new developments, they assist the business in the structuring of transactions, negotiating and executing legal agreements, and resolving legal issues as they arise.

Recent times have demanded team members hone their ability to effectively respond to the unexpected and surfaced a need to be concerned with contributing to strategy at deeper levels within the organisation. This has meant assisting with the preparation for and the response to various geopolitical events, supporting the exploration of new products, markets, and initiatives whether digital, ESG, ecommerce, market infrastructural, crypto, or simply due to regulatory developments. The team participates in a variety of globally recognised industry bodies and initiatives such as ISDA, GFXD and the Bank of England Foreign Exchange Joint Standing Committee and additionally are enthusiastic in their commitments to pro bono and diversity equity and inclusion activities for the benefit of the financial services and legal industries alike.

The EMEA FX and LMR Legal team is part of the EMEA Markets Legal Team which comprises around 130 permanent legal staff located across London, Belfast, and Dublin.
