About

Kate Fewings, regional head of legal for global financial giant Citi in the Asia Pacific region, leads a team of approximately 220 lawyers in the Citi Asia Pacific legal team based across the region. The team functions with distinct regional product and country counsel groups, which are separated into litigation, operations and technology, markets and securities services, corporate lending, private banking, institutional banking, treasury and trade solutions, and consumer banking teams. Each team has an appointed leader, and each country within the Asia Pacific region has a country counsel and team of varying degrees within the region’s 12 countries in total. Regarding the team’s changing role within the bank and the evolution of the global market, Fewings says: ‘A fundamental shift is taking place in the world, where three overlapping trajectories of change – regulatory, political and technology – are amplifying changes for businesses around the world. With its diverse markets, different paces of change and growth and rapid digitisation, Asia poses interesting opportunities and challenges for business growth and sustainability’. As a global bank with a wide business remit and an unparalleled footprint, scale and networks across the world, Citi needs its employees to be able to react quickly and in a risk appropriate manner, and with regards to this challenge the legal team has adapted and evolved accordingly. One key change in recent years is the speed at which it has had to work with Citi’s business teams on new launches, especially those in the digitisation and FinTech space. The team has learned about the evolution of digitisation, FinTech, the use of big data in the financial services sector, and the legal implications and impact that these have on the business and customers. Fewings says that, ‘as Citi’s products and client solutions are getting more digital and simple for the clients, the legal and regulatory issues around them are actually getting more complex, and as a legal function, we have to adapt and evolve to the next level’. Her legal team has worked on a number of recent cases in which the bank has been recognised and as its Asia Pacific franchise continues to grow and evolve, the team works hand in hand with the business partners from the outset. The regional legal teams are involved in all transactions or landmark deals as well as forging new paths into the future. About the defining ethos of the legal team, Fewings explain that the team is ‘always working towards helping the firm grow and evolve. We have a very distinct team culture [and] ethos throughout the bank – everything we do is aimed at being the best for clients so that we can enable growth and progress for them. This drives the culture within the bank and the team – how we think, work, interact and collaborate with each other. Of course, for the legal team the focus is first and foremost on our role as advisors to the bank and through that flows the value we add to the business Citi does’.
