Süreyya Uğurses, the country legal counsel, company secretary and assistant general manager, who has over 20 years’ experience in the banking and finance sector, leads the legal team of four lawyers and one clerk at the Turkish subsidiary of the international financial services company, Citibank. The team includes, Beliz Başaran, senior legal counsel, with 19 years of banking sector legal experience; Burcu Demirkaya, legal counsel, with 15 years’ experience; Duygu Ayas, counsel with nine years’ experience and Ahmet Atakan, clerk, with 11 years of experience. The enactment of various new regulations in Turkey and across the globe has tremendously impacted the legal work in banking sector and, according to Uğurses, new regulations have had ‘a direct influence on the banking industry and scrutiny of the local and global regulators have a tangible impact on the way the bank conducts its business. She adds that, ‘Carrying out [in a timely manner] the necessary assessment of their impact to our bank’s business and while doing this, gathering all the relevant business units together helps us overcome this challenge’. The highly experienced and talented team has continued impressing external peers in this regard. Regarding the legal function’s philosophy, Uğurses highlights that the team’s ‘goal is to be a reliable partner to the business and placing the legal department as an easily reachable control function. While protecting the interest of our bank, we are also helping the business to come up with client friendly solutions’.
