About

Led by associate managing director Juan Luis Rodriguez Rivero, a talented team of 13 lawyers oversees the Mexico and Hispanic South America division of Accenture, a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company operating in over 120 countries. The team, which is spread across the region and has a Mexico-based presence of four lawyers, has been praised for its response to Accenture’s recent reorganisation. This saw the legal function undergo its own reorganisation, creating one department responsible for all Accenture’s client-facing matters, risk management and negotiation requirements and another which leads on corporate governance, ethics and compliance matters. According to Rodriguez Rivero the changes have ‘allocated resources in a more efficient way’, helping the team add value to the business by building a ‘deeper knowledge of the complex solutions they are selling’. The legal function has also lowered its external counsel fees by developing in-house talent, particularly through a training programme to help the Mexico and Hispanic South America team provide more efficient cross-border support without compromising on quality. The team has also been trained to have full understanding of new emerging business models in the industry in order to be ‘ahead of the market’. A related development has seen it set up two panels comprising external lawyers and ‘colleagues from software and technology companies’ to discuss new trends, challenges, business practices and ideas in the fast changing technology industry. With a stronger company focus on cloud services offerings, the team has adapted its standard contracts to new legal structures for specific projects which, according to Rodriguez Rivero, is ‘acting as real solution architects and business advisors going beyond the traditional legal counsel role’. Other notable initiatives include delivering a robust anti-corruption training program across the company and its vendors, handling new data privacy laws and simplifying contracts. In addition to these team-wide achievements, each individual within the legal function has achieved notable success. For instance, legal manager Pamela Zamudio has negotiated a number of important contracts tenders, legal manager Alba Hernández plays an important role in compliance, data privacy protection and procurement procedures matters among other areas. The most recent addition to the Mexico-based team, Maria José Hernández, is highlighted for his contribution to its overall strategy while adding important contacts to the department’s network of technology attorneys. The team has recently worked on significant confidential deals for Accenture’s distinguished clients recently. These have included a large analytics projects, a large systems implementation and transformation deal and the acquisition of business units.
