Representing over a quarter of the company’s global headcount, Accenture in India employs around 130,000 people to cater for the requirements of Indian businesses operating in virtually all major industries. According to managing director – legal and senior legal business partner Rajeev Chopra, Accenture India’s legal team of 23 legal professionals ‘played a pivotal role in synchronising business needs and legal requirements and holds the repute of a trusted advisor for Accenture’s business in India’. Internally the team has contributed to the company’s knowledge capital by proactively developing a contract repository tool containing critical client obligations with global access and an online compliance tool with automated workflow, which coordinates and consolidates regulatory compliance management. Explaining the relationship between Accenture’s legal function and business, Chopra says, ‘our internal businesses rely on the in-house legal team for its counsel to avert and mitigate risks. The legal team transcends beyond mere legal advice and provides proactive solutions to business requirements, which ensure resolution of the impasse and complements stakeholder collaboration’. He adds, ‘the team interacts with the leadership team on a regular basis and provides valuable advice on strategic transactions and key business initiatives’. Other notable members who make up the legal team include vice president (legal) Shahnaz Ahmed, who supports the company’s Global Delivery Network division, and Cheriachen Akkatt who supports the compliance function. Renju Hariharan and Jatin Gupta are also highlighted by Chopra for their expertise in dealing intellectual property and B2B contractual matters respectively. Dealing with employment law and relations, Himanshu Mathur, Valarmati Selvaraj and Motty John have been identified as some of the best legal talent in the team. Summing up the expertise and of the team and its contribution to the business, Chopra says, ‘the Accenture legal team has provided transformational, unique and complex support in guiding Accenture’s business continuity team to have enhanced preparedness for force majeure events by laying down a legal process to engineer recovery during these events, which has now been accepted as a global standard process within Accenture’.
