What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Our team is spread across the UK, Germany and Israel, and supports a rapidly growing TransitTech business in the EMEA region, working at the emerging interface of transport and technology. As a result, the team is continually developing innovative legal solutions, as well as working within the high expectations that come with a scaling business. Via’s software is currently used in more than 600 communities in 35+ countries around the world.

Last year we partnered with Cheshire East, in the UK, to launch an on-demand rural bus service to help reduce both social isolation and car dependency in the area, and we worked with Bromsgrove (UK) to develop a new on-demand public transport service, aimed at reducing congestion and improving access to affordable, efficient, and convenient public transport. A number of the projects have had an even more direct environmental impact through their use of electric vehicles, such as in Milton Keynes, UK and in Essen, Germany.

We have also been particularly proud of the social impact that Via’s technology has brought to special needs and community transport services, such as with our service in Berlin, Germany. We also recently partnered with Ticketer, a smart ticketing systems supplier in the UK, to transform the way that bus operators, and local authorities in the UK are able to offer demand-responsive transport solutions. In Kelheim, Germany, we’re involved in a pilot to create an autonomous-vehicle ride-sharing service, integrated directly into the local public transport network. Projects like these involved a lot of blank-sheet thinking.

Did the pandemic lead to a lasting increase in the interaction your legal team has with the strategic plans of the company?

The pandemic had an impact on the business of the company, and–as a result–how we, as a legal team, interact with the strategic plans of the business. Working with our business teams, we were able to respond rapidly, adapting our services and operations, while keeping on top of evolving Covid guidance. While certain of our direct-to-consumer services, including in London, UK, were suspended over the pandemic, in December last year, the company announced that it would focus on its TransitTech business and stop providing direct-to-consumer, on-demand shared rides.

In parallel, the pandemic allowed us to facilitate projects that directly responded to the crisis, by using Via’s technology to power innovative emergency transport services, such as an intelligent platform to deliver essential supplies within Sutton, UK, and an on-demand service to transport NHS staff in the East Midlands, UK. In Sevenoaks, UK, to combat a 90% drop in ridership during the pandemic, transportation leaders in the town implemented Via’s software and launched a new on-demand transit service using their fixed route buses.
