Philip Morris’ legal department in Colombia has gone through a busy period in the last few years, implementing fundamental changes that enable it to effectively deal with the inherent complexity of the local cigarette market. Led by legal director Nicolás Cuadros (currently legal director of Philip Morris in Argentina), the function has eliminated a lot of the inefficiencies associated with its previous operational structure, optimising contract procedures and significantly improving speed and response times. As a result the team has evolved in its position, becoming significantly more involved in strategic vision and planning. For example, the team recently supported the launch in Colombia of an innovative technology that heats tobacco instead of burning it, which has the potential to significantly reduce health risks when compared to smoking cigarettes. The product known as IQOS has a potential to transform the local cigarette smoking market in the country, and as the technology is brand new in Colombia, its launch required tireless work from the legal team to ensure compliance with all relevant regulation and legislation in a swift and creative manner. With an internal culture that is an embodiment of Cuadros’ vision of creating an open-door culture of constant collaboration, support and lack of unnecessary hierarchy, the team is recognised for the innovativeness and entrepreneurship of its decision making. Besides Cuadros, the Colombian team features bright legal professionals Alexandra Hernández, Eubrys Rojas, Stella Mateus, Ximena Benavides and Juan Felipe Lazaro.
