Agnieszka Modras
Chief legal and compliance officer | PayPo sp. z o.o.
Team size: 15 including legal, compliance, data protection and AML subdivisions.
In 2025, the PayPo regulatory team under my leadership was responsible for the legal, compliance, data protection, and AML aspects of PayPo’s international expansion efforts. We prepared solutions enabling remote onboarding of foreign customers into the PayPo application and delivered the ability for the PayPo card to be used for BNPL financing in online cross-border purchases as well as in offline (physical) stores abroad.
In parallel, we actively co-created growth by preparing dedicated financing offers for the tourism and insurance sectors and by shaping an innovative payment method for selected merchants, scheduled to launch in 2026.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting? How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive work environment?
What distinguishes my career as a lawyer and legal leader is my interdisciplinary, research-driven approach to managing legal teams. Alongside my professional practice, I completed a PhD at the Faculty of Management of the University of Warsaw, focusing on the intersection of law, risk management, and organisational decision-making.
I am the author of a book, Legal Risk Management in Banking, unique on the Polish market, combining legal theory, practical experience, and academic research into a comprehensive approach to managing legal risk in financial institutions. This academic foundation directly informs my work. I regularly deliver training on legal risk management and speak at industry conferences. As a result, I am recognised as an expert in legal risk management, bridging academia and real-world leadership.
Aside from this, I am deeply passionate about self-development and becoming a T-shaped lawyer. I strongly believe that a credible leader must be versatile, remain intellectually curious, and never rest on past achievements — only then does a leader truly earn the right to inspire, guide, and educate others through example rather than authority alone. Thus, beyond my PhD in management, I have completed postgraduate studies in legal design thinking and leadership psychology, and I am currently studying Italian studies, further developing my cultural and communication skills. In 2025, I also obtained entry onto the official list of court mediators, strengthening my ability to manage conflict and complex stakeholder relationships. What gives me great personal satisfaction is seeing members of my team draw inspiration from this approach and actively engage in their own education and professional development.
