About

As Poland’s Bank Pocztowy is a local post bank with a limited legal budget, its in-house legal department utilises external law firms for a narrow scope of cases, with the rest of the tasks dealt with in-house. ‘To work effectively, I had to adjust our structure accordingly,’ explains the team’s general counsel Agnieszka Modras. ‘I identified best lawyers in most important areas of our business and made them responsible for coordination of respective workflows’. As a result, the department’s current structure resembles a one-stop shop fully professional legal firm, with each of the department’s 11 staff covering a specific legal area, with an ‘exceptionally diligent and dedicated’ junior lawyer Agnieszka Paciorek providing support to the entire team. ‘I am serving as their managing partner, office manager and spokesperson,’ says Ms Modras adding, ‘In such a framework, people may focus on their favourite areas of advice and specialise in these fields while the organisation is provided with internally consistent advice’. For instance, Joanna Makar is responsible for labour law, Angelika Szuba for IT, Monika Kudlek for litigation, Anna Świerczyńska for consumer protection matters, Ilona Wesołowska and Marcin Marcinkowski for corporate finance, while Zbigniew Flasza and Barbara Przewoźniak for debt collection. The team’s achievements over the course of the last two years have centred on supporting new lines of the bank’s business – including mortgage loans, e-banking, corporate banking, and a new retail lending process – as well as on consolidating the bank’s group without any external legal assistance. Besides Modras, who is credited with building the department’s exceptionally strong organisational structure, several of Bank Pocztowy’s in-house lawyers have stood out in the past two years. Andrzej Schneider, for instance, is described as ‘one of the most brilliant senior banking in-house specialists in the country’ and receives mention for his contributions to the overall development of the bank. Mateusz Wiechowski, a ‘bright and talented lawyer’ and the team’s ‘rising star’, has impressed with his work on dealing with regulatory changes. And, last but not least, Miłosz Kacprzak, ‘one of the most solid pillars of the department’, receives praise for his openness to challenges and excellent support to the business.
