Team size: Three

Graduate of the Private University of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (UPSA), with a postgraduate degree in Corporate Law from NUR University and a Master’s Degree in Business Law from the University of Valencia, Spain.

I am part of the legal department of one of the most prestigious companies in the cement industry in Bolivia, Itacamba Cemento, providing legal advice on corporate legal matters, where I have been able to participate in projects involving the incorporation of companies, capital increases and reductions, liquidations and closures, mergers and acquisitions, as well as providing legal support to our subsidiaries on issues related to the proper governance of their companies. In the corporate sphere, I have a solid background that has allowed me to understand each of the challenges in order to provide legal protection.

In the area of compliance, over the last year we have implemented policies to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, especially those relating to the prevention of corruption, the legitimisation of illicit gains and the defence of competition.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

In recent years in Bolivia, the role of corporate lawyers has been exposed to an unprecedented level of risk, as we face daily legal uncertainty leading to instability and unpredictability in the face of non-compliance with legal regulations, which in many cases causes damage to businesses. In this regard, we have created legal matrices accompanied by a contingency plan that has allowed us to establish protocols for action in emergency scenarios, We have been able to identify critical regulations that may affect our company’s business and, in this way, become a strategic facilitator in designing flexible contractual structures that allow us to adapt to changes and serve as a shield and engine of resilience so that our company not only survives the crisis but also emerges stronger.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

Itacamba Cemento has successfully adapted our partners’ commercial strategies to set objectives based on seven strategic pillars, generating a detailed action plan that demonstrates our firm commitment to sustainability.

We leave a positive legacy in our environment by controlling and mitigating our impact, caring for biodiversity, and working on innovative solutions in our country, such as partially replacing fossil fuels with waste, which allows us to reduce our carbon footprint and recover value from the waste generated in our production process. Our social responsibility programme has a positive impact, implementing more than 100 projects that improve the quality of life of more than 40,000 people.

From the legal department, we provide timely regulatory advice for the implementation of these new projects, managing the required permits and licences and finalising the various contracts and agreements to make our commitment to sustainability possible.
