Halil İbrahim Kardıçalı, general counsel and government affairs manager, and Müge Yılmaz, legal counsel, make up the legal team at 3M in Turkey, the local domestic division of the multinational industrial and consumer products conglomerate. As it is a small legal team, there is no hard segregation of duties. Both Kardıçalı and Yılmaz tackle all issues as they present themselves with a strong sense of collaboration and partnership demonstrating their skill and tenacity. The department works in close collaboration with the compliance team, conducts trainings and supports investigations. It is also trusted in managing the government affairs for the company where Kardıçalı plays a prominent role as the spokesperson for the company and representing the same in front of government bodies. 3M is in constant change and is always evaluating new ways to better serve its customers, by the same token new tools and business models are introduced in the system. Establishing the inside sales organisation, starting e-commerce initiatives and supporting the restructuring of the channel structure are all initiatives where the legal department created a difference. Kardıçalı highlights that ‘coping with 3M’s business transformation journey and reshaping the well-established institutions of the company has created great value for the company’. The legal department acts as an information hub for the company gathering data both from the outside world but also from the company’s own divisions which may not be in harmony with each other, building the bridges in these instances to make a big difference for the company. As Kardıçalı describes, the team maintains ‘a day-to-day application of “Yes, if”, attitude instead of naysaying’.
