Producer of a vast portfolio of products ranging from car wax to healthcare and industrial products, US-based multinational 3M has diverse and complex operations across the Middle East and North Africa. When Walid Sowaidan, 3M’s general counsel for Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEEMEA), joined the company in 2007 he was the sole counsel for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. By 2009 the team began expanding and now holds more than 15 lawyers and a number of paralegals divided amongst the numerous regional markets 3M operates in. This geographical diversity has forced Sowaidan and his team think about new ways of communicating and pooling information. At the same time, each member of the team operates with a level of autonomy that can only come from mutual trust, something nominators said was indicative of the efforts that have gone into building a supportive culture across the organisation. Further growth in the team has come with the newly established government relations function. The Middle East and Africa (MEA) regional government affairs function now has three staff building and maintaining relationships. Recent initiatives of the 3M legal team include a new “Policy Alignment” strategy to bring company policies into synchronisation across the MEA region while also meeting the varying requirements of local law. This initiative has helped the legal team to reduce its workload when analysing risks but has also played a crucial role in opening up new commercial opportunities by allowing business to move more rapidly in the region.
