Under the directions of general counsel Jonathan Marsh, the legal function at global energy and commodity trading company Vitol has recently reorganised to help it optimise efficiency and value-add in its global activities. Marsh has made some key changes to Vitol since joining in 2010, including centralising the legal procurement process and revamping the way in which legal interacts with business. A strategic focus on new staff has allowed team to provide a much wider range of legal advice without recourse to external counsel. Further, the team has now taken control of decisions over when to appoint external counsel. With this reorganisation has come a renewed focus on improving the quality of training to ensure the team remains at the apex of modern business practices.
