Headquartered in Geneva, SGS is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. With more than 85,000 employees, SGS operates a network of more than 1,800 offices and laboratories around the world. General counsel and chief compliance officer Olivier Merkt, who joined SGS in 2001, has led the legal team through 10 complete acquisitions in the first semester of 2016, as many as over the course of the full year of 2015. Despite the regulatory hurdles, organisational barriers and complex nature of global supply chains, these acquisitions further expanded the group’s footprint into new markets and created a more diverse service offering in transportation, industrial, oil and gas, minerals, environment and retail. Combined, these companies have added €48m to the group’s revenue and €1m to the operating income in 2016, directly illustrating some of the value that the legal team has been able to add to the company. SGS was also awarded the gold recognition level from EcoVadis for its sustainability performance in 2016, a rating only given to suppliers and supply chains with the highest levels of sustainability.
