A commercial and corporate in-house legal counsel with a broad range of global experience, particularly in pharmaceuticals and emerging markets in the EMEA region, Koen has gained experience in building and managing large legal and compliance teams. In his current role at leading global biopharmaceutical company, Merck, Koen has gained experience in leading and managing the legal departments in EMEA involving more than 20 legal counsel, refining his management experience in recruiting, developing and leading internal staff. He is also responsible for ensuring the company complies with all legislative requirements such as anti-corruption and anti-bribery; fair competition and antitrust legislations; local regulatory requirements, including any local business standards; and industry regulations or codes in the territories of Africa, South Africa, Turkey and Israel. He previously worked as legal director for global pharmaceutical company, Actavis, leading the legal division for the CEE, North Africa and Middle East. Amongst his most noteworthy projects include leading a team of in-house and external counsel in a trademark sale worth €8m in Poland. While there, he was also responsible for managing the team in charge of the divestment project in Bulgaria worth €40m.
