Career Biography
Laia Macià Usua is Head of Legal and Compliance Officer at Prensa Ibérica, where she leads the legal function of one of Spain’s most established media groups. In a business shaped by digital transformation, regulatory scrutiny and constant commercial evolution, she has helped position the legal team as a trusted business partner to senior management, combining technical expertise with a pragmatic and solutions driven approach. Her practice spans corporate, commercial, media, advertising, digital, litigation, intellectual property, trademark and compliance matters, and she regularly advises on issues that are both strategically significant and operationally complex.
Since joining Prensa Ibérica in 2021, Laia has played an active role in supporting the group’s strategic development and in advising on key transactions and business initiatives. Her role requires close alignment with management across a diverse organisation with a strong presence in local and regional journalism, as well as activities linked to digital content, audiovisual production, advertising and events. She is particularly valued for her ability to translate legal analysis into commercially workable solutions and to support decision making in a fast moving and highly visible sector.
Qualified in both New York and Spain, Laia has built an international career that combines top tier experience at law firms with senior in house leadership roles across several industries. She began her career in New York City, working on litigation and real estate matters, before moving to Barcelona to join Clifford Chance. During her seven years at the firm, she worked on corporate finance, acquisitions, real estate and project finance transactions, and also gained experience in M&A and related due diligence processes.
She later moved in house to Abengoa, S.A. (now Cox Energy), where she spent almost a decade within the corporate legal department of a listed multinational group. There, she was responsible for legal finance matters, advising business teams in Spain and internationally, and negotiating contracts linked to project finance and capital markets transactions.
She subsequently served as Director of the Legal Department and Secretary to the Board of Directors at Grupo DiR. Her experience also includes a period as Senior Lawyer at Alfanar Energia España.
Across each stage of her career, Laia has developed a reputation for sound judgement, commercial awareness and the ability to operate effectively at the intersection of law, business and governance. Her background across finance, energy, infrastructure, real estate, consumer businesses and media gives her a broad and distinctive perspective as an in-house leader. She was recognised in the Legal 500 directory: Iberia Teams 2019 and GC Powerlist Spain 2025.
