About

Number of years practice: 32 Principal practice areas: Finance, infrastructure, energy and projects Bar admissions: District of Columbia, New York and Venezuela Languages spoken: English, Italian and Spanish

Miguel Zaldivar is a partner at Hogan Lovells and serves as a member of the firm’s Global Board of Directors. He is also global co-head of Hogan Lovells’ infrastructure, project and public finance (IPPF) practice group and former co-head of its Latin America practice group. A member of the District of Columbia, Florida and Venezuela bars, Zaldivar has extensive experience advising in both the common and civil law systems and has helped facilitate considerable investment and numerous financings between Asia and Latin America. He is particularly well known for his frequent representation of the Ministry of Finance of Ecuador and has a wide experience of advising state-owned entities across Latin America, including representing Pemex in the development of a $2bn large-scale olefins production complex in Mexico. In 2012, acting in conjunction with fellow Miami-based Hogan Lovells partner Richard Lorenzo, Zaldivar co-led on one of the firm’s most high-profile representations of a state-owned entity, defending Pemex Exploration and Production against a petition to confirm a $300m International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) arbitral award that had been nullified by the Mexican courts. This case led to a number of appeals and, although Pemex ultimately lost its 2016 appeal, Zaldivar’s work on the hearing has been recognised as outstanding. Zaldivar is a member of the dean’s advisory council of the Florida International University College of Law and co-chair of the International Business Transactions Committee of the International Law Section of the Florida Bar. He served for 20 years as external international counsel for the Central American Bottling Corporation, advising on complex cross-border transactions.
