Another key lateral hire for Orrick’s Houston office, George Humphrey is a significant player in Mexico’s burgeoning renewable energy industry and oil-and-gas sector. Humphrey has extensive experience in Mexico renewable energy projects, including wind and solar, and in downstream and midstream oil and gas. He joined the firm in early 2016, having been a partner at Andrews Kurth, now Hunton Andrews Kurth. Humphrey has had a long history of representing clients on international project development, finance and M&A, especially in energy transactions throughout Latin America. Over the past two decades, Humphrey has developed a strong practice representing clients in the Mexican market. He spent his first two years of practice working for Mexico City firm Basham, Ringe y Correa and has overseen the development and closing of project financings for billions of dollars-worth of energy projects, including conventional power, renewables, oil and gas, petrochemical and carbon capture projects. He has advised on energy projects in Mexico and across Latin America and closed project financings representing sponsors with multilaterals, export credit agencies and commercial banks. His recent work in Mexico includes serving as lead international counsel to the sponsor on the closing of a first-of-its kind structure to bring low-cost natural gas from the United States to a $1.3bn ammonia facility in Mexico. Additionally, he has advised clients on the potential acquisition of renewables companies with portfolios of wind and solar projects in Mexico and has evaluated power purchase agreements in Mexico. In early 2018, he led the team advising Gas y Petroquímica de Occidente and G2X Energy (subsidiaries of Switzerland-based Proman), on the development of a $1.3bn ammonia plant in Mexico. The team advised on structuring the cross-border gas supply contracts with four different counterparties, which included agreements for the private sale of natural gas in Mexico. Humphrey frequently speaks on topics relating to the Mexican power market and renewable energy projects and development.
