Splitting his time between Miami and New York, Fernando Alonso chairs Hunton Andrews Kurth’s Latin American and Iberian practice group. Clients say his ‘depth of knowledge and negotiation skills have proven to be excellent and beneficial’. An expert in corporate, banking and capital markets matters, he frequently acts for public and private companies and major financial institutions on a range of cross-border transactions. M&A, private equity transactions, joint ventures, debt and equity financing and partnership structuring all fall within his extensive range of experience; he has also handled privatisations, government contracts and concessions. Energy, infrastructure and telecoms are particular sector strengths. In international M&A, Alonso has excelled in the financial services sector in recent years. He acted for Banco de Sabadell on its $1bn sale to Iberiabank (IBKC), and assisted Promerica Financial with its purchase of Banco Citibank de Guatemala and its affiliate Cititarjetas de Guatemala. In previous years, he advised Corporación Interamericana para el Financiamiento de Infraestructura (CIFI) on a follow-on financing for the 220km Tourist Corridor of Honduras toll road. On the contentious side, he acted for Finmeccanica in proceedings against the government of Panama regarding the latter’s alleged reneging on contracts. He is also a member of the Council of the Americas (COA), and sits on the board of directors of the Spain-US Chamber of Commerce.
