What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past twelve months?
I led the deployment of PROTEA, Repsol’s global legal transformation program, reshaping the delivery of legal services in Peru. The project integrated legal-tech tools, advanced knowledge management, agile methodologies and data-driven workflows into the local legal function. A key achievement was completing and strengthening a high-performance legal team aligned with this new digital, collaborative model. The transformation accelerated the adoption of generative AI and modernised the function end-to-end, positioning it as a proactive, globally integrated business partner.
How do you manage legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis, ensuring that your legal strategy aligns with the broader business?
We manage legal matters in periods of instability or crisis through a structured, globally aligned approach that ensures full coherence between legal strategy and the company’s broader business priorities. Operating in a highly regulated and socially sensitive sector requires anticipating legal, operational and reputational risks while keeping our strategy aligned with Repsol’s global vision.
Our model relies on close, continuous coordination between the Legal Department and critical corporate areas, including operations, communications, HSE, public affairs and senior leadership, as well as the combined expertise of our in-house team and specialised
external counsel. This cross-functional interaction enables us to assess risks in real time, respond swiftly and consistently, and ensure that legal decisions reinforce strategic objectives such as sustainability, operational continuity, and stakeholder trust.
Clear leadership is essential. By fostering transparent communication, empowering teams, and maintaining alignment with global standards, the legal function provides clarity, resilience, and strategic direction—even in fast-moving or high-pressure scenario.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into legal teams, how can general counsel ensure the successful incorporation of these tools without compromising the human element?
We ensure the effective integration of AI by driving a human-centered digital transformation in which technology amplifies – rather than replaces – the expertise and judgment of the legal team. By incorporating tools such as Harvey, Copilot, Power BI, and others into a unified ecosystem, we streamline routine work, accelerate analysis, and enhance accuracy, allowing lawyers to redirect their time toward high-impact strategic matters.
Safeguarding the human element remains essential. Legal professionals retain full responsibility for the final assessment through structured processes that emphasise prompt design, validation of sources, interpretation of results and the application of ethical and contextual judgment. Adoption is guided through pilots, hands-on workshops, and continuous training to build digital confidence across the team.
This approach ensures that AI strengthens the legal function’s analytical depth and agility while preserving the rigor, accountability, and strategic perspective that only human judgment can deliver.
