Formerly known as Finmeccania, the Italian aerospace, defence and security multinational Leonardo is one of the largest defence contractors in the world and requires a comprehensive amount of legal advice covering all of its business areas and geographic locations. Heading up the global legal department is group general counsel Andrea Parrella, who was named as one of Italy’s premier GCs in the GC Powerlist: Italy in 2016 due to his outstanding legal stewardship of the company. Parrella oversees a team of legal and compliance professionals that is expected to manage complex international projects that demand a high level of legal technical knowledge. Complying with the various regulations that impose challenging guidelines with regards to the company’s new and existing product range is a difficult challenge to reconcile with being business enablers, but the Leonardo legal team can be proud of its ability to balance both. The team is responsible for the management of all legal, corporate and compliance matters including litigation, contracts, M&A transactions and business and trade compliance issues throughout its seven business divisions.
