Rossella Mancusi Barone
General Counsel and Brand Compliance Officer | Brioni (Kering Group)
What are the most significant cases, projects, or transactions that you and your legal team have recently been involved in?
Over the past year my team managed cross-border commercial negotiations and high-value licensing and distribution agreements supporting Brioni’s omni-channel expansion, led brand-protection actions against counterfeiting and unauthorised retail, and coordinated sensitive employment and executive mobility matters tied to our global organisation. We also oversaw complex data-privacy remediation projects (GDPR alignment across new markets) and steered multi-jurisdictional regulatory work related to product labelling and customs classification.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Managing legal risk in instability or crisis: I prioritise rapid fact-gathering, scenario mapping, and decisive escalation protocols. We maintain pre-agreed crisis playbooks, pre-selected external counsel panels, and cross-functional war-rooms (legal, compliance, operations, communications). Early legal framing of options preserves operational agility while protecting the Group’s liability profile and reputation. Clear communication lines to the Executive Committee and Board ensure timely governance decisions and resilient outcomes.
General counsel often speak of the need to be strategic to reach the pinnacle of the profession. What does being strategic mean to you?
Being strategic means aligning legal priorities with long-term business objectives: anticipating regulatory shifts, embedding risk management into corporate planning, and advising on transactions that build durable competitive advantage. It requires combining legal foresight with commercial judgement—shaping options, not merely blocking risks—and influencing corporate decisions through concise, outcome-focused counsel.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
Adaptability to fast-changing regulatory environments; commercial acumen to balance legal risk with business goals; strong stakeholder influence and clear communication; technical mastery in core areas (IP, contracts, data privacy, employment); and ethical courage—being able to give candid advice even when uncomfortable. Technology literacy and an analytical mindset complete the profile.
How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?
Legal must lead by integration, not isolation. We embed ESG criteria into contracting, supplier due diligence, and product governance; build practical, role-specific training; and partner with HR, procurement, and sustainability teams to translate policy into measurable processes. Making compliance business-enabling—through clear playbooks, incentives, and simple escalation channels—creates ownership at every level.
