My legal strategy is aligned with the company’s business objectives to strengthen organisational resilience. I proactively identify and mitigate legal risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and protect the organisation’s assets and reputation. By staying up to date with evolving laws and regulations, collaborating closely with all business functions, and providing strategic legal guidance, we support operational continuity, sustainable growth, and long-term success.

The key principles to me are: stay informed about legal and regulatory developments, communicate transparently, involve legal counsel for complex matters, identify and assess legal risks, establish a crisis management framework, and maintain a clear crisis management plan with defined roles, responsibilities, communication protocols, and regular training for key personnel.

General counsel often speak of the need to be strategic to reach the pinnacle of the profession. What does being strategic mean to you?

To me, being strategic means ensuring that the legal function is not only a protector of the business but also a driver of its success. It requires aligning legal advice with the company’s commercial objectives, anticipating legal and regulatory risks before they materialise, and enabling informed decision-making. A strategic General Counsel understands the business, collaborates across functions, and provides practical, solutions-oriented guidance that balances risk management with growth opportunities. Ultimately, being strategic means creating long-term value by protecting the organisation’s interests while supporting innovation, resilience, and sustainable business success.

What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?

A successful digital transformation of the legal department starts with aligning technology initiatives with the organisation’s business and legal objectives. My approach is to implement digital solutions that improve efficiency, transparency, and collaboration while embedding compliance and data protection by design. This includes conducting privacy and security assessments, ensuring compliance with applicable data protection laws, establishing clear governance for data management, and working closely with IT, Compliance, and Cybersecurity teams. I also prioritise staff training, change management, and continuous monitoring of legal and regulatory developments to ensure that digital tools remain secure, compliant, and aligned with evolving business needs.
