Based across Ireland and the US, Etsy’s legal function has been a key component of its marked success and rapid expansion in the e-commerce sector over recent years. Having carved out a valuable niche providing a marketplace for international handmade, vintage or otherwise unique items, it is consistently achieving greater and greater exposure thanks to an innovative and efficient business model. Its legal team is led by New York City-based general counsel Jill Simeone, with assistant general counsel and legal director of commercial Ronan Davy being the most senior Ireland-based lawyer. Davy was the company’s first non US-based hire and is responsible in a large part for the legal team’s international expansion; he also operates as board director for all international subsidiary companies – showcasing commercial acumen to go alongside his legal skill. Stephen Heary, senior legal counsel in the company’s commercial division, has also impressed over the course of almost two and a half years with the company at both its Dublin and New York City offices.
