GAIL – formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited – is India’s largest natural gas company and is ranked among the top gas utilities in Asia with a turnover of approximately $8.9bn. Led by executive director Subir Bikas Mitra, GAIL’s legal department has helped the energy giant achieve major milestones such as the acquisition of its first shale gas assets in the United States in 2011 as well as an important large agreement to buy gas from Turkmenistan in 2012. More recently, the legal team gained credit and acclaim for handling a range of legal matters concerning GAIL’s construction of the Haldia natural gas pipeline and the Varanasi City Gas Distribution Project, both of which will deliver eco-friendly energy to millions of Indians through a variety of platforms. Other areas the team of highly qualified legal professionals has shown its talent is through dealing with all of the company’s labour law issues, litigation cases and the creation of wholly owned subsidiary companies to support the GAIL’s growth plans.
