About

Managing the legal department of Amazon Spain, a subsidiary of the leading multinational technology company, Ana Buitrago serves as Spain legal director and associate general counsel having joined the company in 2012. The Amazon Spain legal department is a team of high-performing professionals, fully committed to Amazon’s leadership principles. In the words of a nominator: ‘Its clients praise the team for its deep business acumen and first-in-class advice on strategic matters. Amazon Spain legal is also up to date with modern technology and trends, and has achieved great results in simplifying and automating internal processes and knowledge-sharing mechanisms as a way to allow the autonomy required in a fast-paced environment’. The legal team at Amazon Spain currently consists of 10 lawyers, along with one legal assistant and one legal compliance specialist. The team is structured to focus on three main categories: consumer – each legal counsel supports a business category and also specialises in a legal area (for example, IP, privacy, and regulatory); operations – a senior corporate counsel covers the full range of issues of the logistics business; and employment – supported by a senior corporate counsel for both operations and consumer businesses. Apart from Buitrago, the senior members of the team include Jonathan Entrena, Ana Alpera, Ilsen Rodriguez, and Paola Montero. The team recently welcomed three new members, with two associate corporate counsels coming from private practice and one corporate counsel with previous in-house experience. The team has largely supported the launch of all new consumer features and services of Amazon in Spain such as Amazon Business, new Prime benefits and Alexa, and cooperated closely with the business in launching new logistic sites across the country and new business models such as AmFlex. ‘We have also rolled out a new corporate compliance program, including the creation of a brand-new supervisory board, and played a key role in the adaptation of all the European stores and services to GDPR’, says Buitrago. Talking about the team culture, Buitrago further comments: ‘We are business partners. Our mission is to enable innovative products and services to delight our customers. We are a relatively small team of top, highly motivated legal professionals who relentlessly focus on removing business obstacles and fostering our company high ethics values, with the customer in mind’.
