About

The construction division of French conglomerate Bouygues had an order book of over €30bn in 2016, almost half of which was in its home country. By pursuing a strategy of building infrastructure projects in emerging markets and focusing on profitability rather than volume, Bouygues Construction has continued to grow year-on-year. The ability of the legal team, led by Jean-Marc Kiviatkowski, has enabled the construction business to expand into new territories and enabled it to tender on unique mega-transactions across the world. As Kiviatkowski is the executive vice president with responsibility for legal affairs, insurance, auditing, internal control and compliance, the team that he leads has a diverse workload as well as a diverse geography to cover. The legal and compliance teams have had a key part to play in some of the company’s largest projects across the globe, for example: the Iqaluit Airport terminal in northeastern Canada (2017); the Singapore Sports Hub (2014); the Henri Konan Bédié Bridge in the Ivory Coast (2014); and the Port of Miami tunnel (2014). As well as the traditional mega-projects Bouygues Construction has been forward-looking in its technological advancements. In April 2017 the company announced that it would be building the first 3D-printed housing unit in France. The compliance and regulatory hurdles behind this will have been complex, with the legal team having to prove the legal security of the concept for the company to continue with its plans.
