Legal and regulatory compliance manager | IMCRUZ / Inchcape

What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

I have led two high-impact initiatives: (i) building a compliance culture in Bolivia, a uniquely challenging environment where informal work exceeds 70%. Operating under UK standards, we designed and deployed a full compliance framework (risk matrices, controls, policies and training), achieving alignment with headquarters and embedding compliance into the business; and (ii) AI-driven legal transformation, developing system-based tools to monitor processes and generate reporting, delivering c.30% efficiency gains and enhancing decision-making.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Operating in a volatile market requires the legal function to act as a strategic enabler of business continuity. We focus on delivering pragmatic, risk-balanced solutions for senior management. In 2025, amid currency shortages, fuel constraints and a government transition, we implemented legal strategies that allowed the company to remain operational under highly adverse conditions.

What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?

While Bolivia’s regulatory framework is still evolving, we operate under UK-level data protection standards, ensuring strong governance. Our approach centres on enabling innovation while maintaining robust safeguards, allowing us to accelerate digital transformation without compromising data security.

Have you had any experience during your legal career as a lawyer that stands out as particularly unique or interesting?

I led the legal structuring of a complex merger by absorption of five entities into a single company, executed on time, within scope and without risk exposure—representing a significant legal and operational milestone.

Given the current geopolitical shifts and growing uncertainties around international free trade, has your company’s risk profile evolved, and are you taking measures to address these challenges?

Yes. Our risk profile is continuously refined through active monitoring of geopolitical shifts, trade uncertainty, tariffs and market dynamics. We proactively anticipate change and focus on business lines with long-term sustainability and growth potential.

Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?

The role of legal has evolved towards a technology-enabled, value-driven function, where efficiency and strategic input are key differentiators.

How can a general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

Through visible leadership, continuous training and sustained awareness efforts, ensuring that compliance and ESG principles are embedded across all levels of the organisation.

AI has been taken seriously as a potentially revolutionary technological change in the legal world for a number of years now. Has it had a meaningful impact in how your legal team works in this time?

Absolutely—AI has had a transformational impact. Early adoption and internal tool development have enabled measurable efficiency gains, reducing costs and improving the quality and speed of legal support.

What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about? Why is this?

I am driven by delivering high-quality work on time and within scope, particularly in compliance, which strongly aligns with my personal values.

What factors influence your team’s decision to use external legal services versus handling matters in-house, and what criteria are used to evaluate their performance?

External counsel is engaged for specialised and complex matters. We assess performance based on responsiveness, analytical depth and the quality of risk assessment provided.

How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company? Can you share an example of a recent legal-led initiative that had a significant impact?

The legal function acts as a strategic business partner, developing digital tools that deliver real-time monitoring, metrics and reporting, enhancing transparency and business decision-making.

Looking forward, what trends do you foresee in the legal landscape over the next 5–10 years that companies should prepare for?

Key priorities include strengthening compliance frameworks, scaling responsible AI adoption, and adapting to more flexible working models.
