What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?
Over the past year, much of our work has focused on helping Universidad Católica Boliviana “San Pablo” navigate growth and change while maintaining strong governance and legal certainty.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role has been supporting strategic institutional projects that go far beyond traditional legal work. Our team has been involved in reviewing and modernising internal regulations, contractual frameworks, and governance instruments to ensure they remain aligned with the university’s evolving needs. We have also provided legal support for new academic and postgraduate programmes, institutional partnerships, and collaborative initiatives with both public and private sector organisations.
At the same time, we have worked closely with university leadership on organisational and labour-related matters, helping manage risk while enabling informed and timely decision-making. As a small legal team serving a community of more than 4,500 students, we have learned the importance of being proactive, accessible, and solutions-oriented.
Rather than waiting for conflicts to arise, we focus on prevention, helping different areas of the university identify risks early, strengthen processes, and build a culture of compliance and accountability. For me, one of the most meaningful achievements has been contributing to the institution’s development while preserving its educational mission and values.
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company? Can you share an example of a recent legal-led initiative that had a significant impact?
I believe that in-house lawyers create the greatest value when they are involved in decisions from the beginning, not only when problems emerge. For that reason, our legal team works as a strategic partner to academic and administrative leaders across the university.
A recent initiative that reflects this approach was the implementation of a preventive legal risk and compliance framework. The project was designed to strengthen governance, improve consistency in decision-making, and encourage a more proactive approach to legal and institutional risk.
We reviewed and standardised key legal documents, strengthened internal procedures, and worked with different departments to promote greater awareness of legal and compliance considerations in their daily activities. Beyond the technical improvements, the initiative helped position the legal function as a collaborative partner focused on enabling institutional objectives.
The experience reinforced my belief that legal departments can make a meaningful contribution not only by protecting organisations from risk, but also by helping them innovate, adapt, and grow responsibly. Looking ahead, I see legal teams playing an increasingly important role in areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, governance, and institutional sustainability, particularly within the higher education sector
