Known in the Argentinian in-house legal market for being a ‘complete legal professional’, Mariano Romero de Haz is the legal manager of flagship electricity company Pampa Energía, which engages in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, as well as in the production and transport of natural gas. Romero enjoys a ‘fluent relationship’ with the members of the board and with a team including two senior lawyers and an assistant reporting into him. Romero manages legal support over numerous areas of the business, particularly in activities related to the refining and commercialisation of fuels. As the activities and revenue of the company continue to expand, he and the team take on an increasing workload in a changing global energy market. Due to the volatile nature of the hydrocarbons market, Romero defines the role of lawyers within the business as having to be up to date on ‘legal knowledge as well as commercial skills to allow the course of business [to continue], maximising its profits’. In May 2016 Romero was involved in Pampa Energía’s acquisition of the shares of Petrobras Participaciones – which owns 67% of capital and votes of Petrobras Argentina – representing new opportunities for the company in its home market.
