Since MetLife’s entrance into the Colombian market in 2010 when it acquired ALICO (American Life Insurance Company), the legal team has suffered drastic changes and recently in 2015 the newly formed legal department had developed a reputation for excellence and efficiency within the country. Seamlessly supporting all legal work related to MetLife’s 1.100.000 policy holders in Colombia, the six-person team advises all business divisions across the company on legal and regulatory issues. Reporting directly to LatAm Legal – head and senior vice president (Pedro Pesqueira) and in dotted line to country manager (Juliana Tobón), the team acts as a strategic partner to the business having an input to all key decisions made by the company. Enjoying a close and ongoing communication with internal peers, MetLife’s Colombian in-house legal department has recently received positive internal feedback for the introduction of several initiatives designed to develop a culture of compliance within the company. These include a newsletter that is delivered to employees at regular intervals, informing them of various legal and regulatory developments affecting the business, and monthly training sessions for non-lawyers on regulatory and compliance issues. The team is led by Gustavo Sáchica, a proactive insurance lawyer who has been described as one of the ‘brightest minds’ in the sector.
