What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

Recently, I have had the privilege of contributing Softys’ regional expansion through the acquisition of Ontex’s operations in Brazil and Mexico, as well as the purchase of Carta Fabril and Sepac in Brazil. The acquisition and integration process of these companies has been highly challenging. Today, Softys employs over 15,000 people across 8 Latin American countries. The region’s legal and compliance demands require us to stay constantly updated in a highly dynamic market—one that calls for agile responses to meet the needs of both the business and our consumers. Over the past year, we have continued our efforts to standardise practices at a regional level across all eight countries. This includes areas such as contracting, personal data protection, antitrust compliance systems, and ongoing compliance training programs, among others

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

Legal and compliance work is deeply linked to the company’s sustainability. In consumer goods markets, and within regions as dynamic as Latin America, the only way to advance these matters in the face of constant change is to reach teams and employees across all segments through a shared purpose, fostering a true daily culture of doing the right thing. It is also about encouraging team members to ask questions and clear up any doubts. Therefore, the work of the legal and compliance team must be omnipresent—working across every single phase of a project, from its very inception to its completion
