General counsel Nordics | Siemens Energy

Matthias Geiger
General counsel Nordics | Siemens Energy
What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past twelve months?
In line with the rapid growth of our Siemens Energy business, I have supported the expansion of our strong legal team in the Nordics. Due to the fast-changing regulatory landscape, I paid particular attention to legal aspects of topics such as export control, national security, HSE, among others.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel?
Understanding the business and the numbers, navigating the company safely through potential legal pitfalls, technology-affine and open to using AI within own team and in solutions provided to business partners are all key qualities for modern in-house counsel.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into legal teams, and the pressure grows to ‘do more with less’, how can GC balance efficiency, quality and human judgement?
Already today, AI-based tools and solutions can save legal teams a lot of time, and new technologies are becoming increasingly more effective. Human judgement is in many cases still needed to ensure sufficient quality of work results, but pushing back on the use of AI despite its enormous capabilities is not an option. The key is to understand the capabilities and limitations of AI technology.
What key trends – and challenges – should in-house lawyers be monitoring over the next year?
National security legislation and implementation/expectations by customers and other key stakeholders.
