Patricia Astorga
Chief legal officer | Mintz Group
What are the most significant cases, projects, or transactions that you and your legal team have recently been involved in?
Over the past year, my legal team has supported the Mintz Group’s expansion in the Middle East. From initial risk assessments to strategic acquisitions and hires to collaborating with local experts on the establishment and governance of a local UAE entity, we are a strategic partner to our company and private equity sponsors. Mindful of the complexities of conducting corporate due diligence and risk advisory in the Middle East, we provide expert guidance on local laws, identify and manage risks, ensure compliance and structure the operational set up in the new market. Between Q2 2025 and Q4 2026, we have built cross-border teams to serve our clients in the Middle East, identified and collaborated with local experts and advisors and established our entity and offices in the region.
On the technology frontier, we have supported Mintz Group’s development of an AI platform that streamlines due diligence and background checks from days to minutes. From product development to marketing, my legal team has provided guidance on data privacy, data security, and employment issues to ensure that our technological advancements are both compliant and competitive.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
My legal team is a stabilising force through periods of instability and crisis. Whether the challenges and threats are internal or external, we are a guiding hand in managing risk, ensuring compliance, resolving disputes and providing strategic action plans. We balance decisiveness with risk mitigation, understanding the importance of leadership plans and responses that protect the company, enable growth, maintain order and maximise value. In every response plan, communication and coordination are key. We evaluate risks and solutions from the perspectives of all stakeholders, including our clients, employees, private equity sponsors and the public. We consider the implications of our advice and guidance on the well-being of the enterprise, both short- and long-term.
General counsel often speak of the need to be strategic to reach the pinnacle of the profession. What does being strategic mean to you?
Being strategic means investing time and energy into building bridges and knowing when to cross them. Within the profession, a network of allies and advisors is key. I have been fortunate to have the support of trailblasing general counsel who have generously shared their pathways to success and the myriad ways they have navigated challenges. I have also been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to share the wisdom I’ve gained in my path to leadership.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
My experience as a federal criminal prosecutor continues to shape my perspective on crisis, risk and resolutions. Through jury trials, I have learned how to simplify complex legal concepts, earn the trust of various stakeholders and back up every argument with proof, all while remaining unflappable, nimble and at all times, respectful.
