Career Biography
Vasu, as he is known in the legal fraternity, is a Board member of few companies in India, has three decades of diverse industry experience in Legal Strategy, Board, Governance and Stakeholders Management, M&A, Regulatory Affairs and proceedings, Dispute Resolution, State Engagement, Enterprise Legal Risk Management, Intellectual Property, Contract structuring and deal Negotiation, Inquiries and Investigation and Corporate Social Responsibility.
He is presently associated with the Hinduja Group Limited as President – Group General Counsel, overseeing 21 companies in India across diversified sectors including Mobility, Financial Services, Energy, Digital & Technology and Health care. He was earlier associated with National Stock Exchange of India Limited as its Group General Counsel and Head CSR and Bennett Coleman and Co. Limited (The Times of India Group) as Associate Vice President, Group Legal.
He is a Commerce graduate, holds an LLB degree, is a Fellow member of Institute of Company Secretaries of India and has completed certification in Global Corporate Counsel from Harvard Law School. He also completed the Leadership Program for Senior Level Executives from Indian School of Business and professional course on Mergers and Acquisitions from IIM-Calcutta. He is a member, National Committee of Legal and Regulatory affairs of Confederation of Indian Industry.
He successfully handled various high-profile assignments, a few of which include; completion of one of the largest acquisitions in the BFSI space through the IBC process, involving various regulators in India and abroad. In addition, he steered through many M&A deals involving domestic and cross border transactions; successfully dealt with regulators from other jurisdictions Viz. Securities Exchange Commissions and Commodities Trading Futures Commission in the USA, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Hongkong Securities Futures Commission, Taiwan Securities Commission etc. for launch / exemptions for offering various capital market products and services; and a critical role for flight of capital into India from other Asian countries through a long-standing international arbitration, which led to migration of volumes from a Southeast based international Exchange to Gift City in India.
He handled complex Anti-Trust, Technology and IP Litigations, some of which were the first of its kind in India involving complicated Technology structures, Predatory pricing aspects and Compensation claims under Competition Laws, IP on Index values, which involved jurisprudence from other jurisdictions.
He spearheaded the process for monetisation of IP assets, registration of IP portfolio in 45 countries, implemented policy and processes for conducting IP Audits across IP assets.
On Non-Profit Leadership initiatives, as District president Thane, State of Maharashtra for Sri Sathya Organization, he organised large medical and malnutrition camps, set up water projects, infrastructure for schools, vocational training centers and implemented value based Human excellence programs in education for children in rural villages in Thane District.
