How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

During periods of instability or crises, my approach to managing legal aspects focuses on making smart, calculated risks through comprehensive regulatory and business impact analyses. This involves understanding both the immediate and long-term implications of decisions while maintaining alignment with broader business objectives. The key is striking the right balance between regulatory compliance and business growth opportunities.

I believe in efficient resource management and strategic delegation. By implementing automated processes for routine legal matters and establishing clear workflows, we can focus our specialised legal resources on complex, high-impact situations that require detailed attention. This approach allows us to maintain high standards of legal compliance while supporting business innovation and growth.

Through regular engagement with business leaders and stakeholders, I ensure our legal approach not only protects the organisation but also enables its strategic initiatives. This involves careful evaluation of risk tolerance levels and developing solutions that balance regulatory requirements with business objectives. The ultimate goal is to position the legal function as a strategic business partner that facilitates growth while ensuring appropriate risk management and compliance.

What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?

I currently lead the regulatory, litigation, privacy, and competition law practice, where I’ve been handling several significant matters. Most notably, I’m leading the defense strategy in a major competition law investigation initiated by COFECE in 2022, which aims to identify potential entry barriers in the Mexican e-commerce market. This represents the most significant investigation Amazon has faced since establishing operations in Mexico, requiring careful strategic planning and execution.

In my role, I’ve developed and implemented comprehensive litigation and arbitration strategies. Currently, I’m overseeing an active arbitration case in Mexico with a contingency of 70 million dollars, demonstrating our ability to handle complex, high stakes matters. Our approach combines strong legal expertise with deep understanding of business implications.

A crucial aspect of my work involves analysing new regulations and their potential impact on our business operations. I work closely with all business units to help them understand regulatory implications, develop mitigation plans, and create effective strategies. This includes collaborating with our public policy team to provide input on proposed legislation, ensuring our perspective is considered in the legislative process. This proactive approach helps us anticipate and address potential challenges while supporting the company’s growth objectives.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

Diversity and inclusion are core priorities in my leadership approach. Last year, I demonstrated this commitment by leading the women@amazon chapter, where I implemented several successful initiatives including mentorship programs, leadership coffee chats, and professional development book clubs. These programs have created tangible opportunities for growth and networking to women in the company.

In my day-to-day role, I actively promote diversity in practical ways. For instance, I regularly challenge our outside counsel to ensure diverse team composition, and in a recent arbitration case, I specifically required gender parity in the proposed slate of arbitrators. These actions reflect my belief that diversity isn’t just about meeting requirements – it’s about creating real opportunities and ensuring different perspectives are represented in our work. These initiatives have helped foster an inclusive environment where all team members can thrive while contributing to meaningful change in the legal profession.
