Covering a wide spectrum of work from M&A “white space” to digital advertising, business integrity agenda to competition law, the legal function at Unilever is ‘at the heart of the business’ and an integral part of strategic decision making. Esra Tapban leads the legal team of seven members as legal director for Unilever Turkey, Central Asia and Iran. Having only been hired by Tapban in the last 12 months, the legal team was recognised quickly and was awarded internally as “Partnering Team of Unilever” in 2015 and “Pioneering Team of Unilever” in 2016. Describing why the team has been successful, Tapban says ‘in order for our legal team to continue growing and operating at scale, we focused on employing innovative strategies and leveraging the business, establishing processes while balancing the need to preserve our culture and keeping up with the growth. That’s where our legal team comes in to create tools to help us stay organised, track and collaborate on projects, improve our efficiency and help us scale’. Furthermore the team has been proactive and innovative by creating claim committees with other divisions where company statements are finalised before being featured or launched on market. The creation of a ‘golden triangle’ team that consists of legal, external affairs and regulatory representatives, has allowed comprehensive evaluation of legal and regulatory risks, enabling the team to assess the feasibility of the offered claims based on current insights of internal and external legislative developments and internal scientific evaluation on substantiation of claims. Explaining the team’s approach to ensuring the application of Unilever’s “Code of Business Principles” and related “Code Policies”, Tapban says the team ‘embeds a culture of deliberately high standards and behaviours in the workplace, to promote and protect the good reputation of Unilever as well as respecting all applicable laws and regulations’.
