About

Headed by Colombian lawyer Jorge De Los Rios, Unilever’s seven-strong Middle Americas legal team covers the entire Andean region and Central America. Over the past two years the team has put an emphasis on forging a close-knit partnership with the larger company, with each lawyer currently holding direct responsibility for achieving specific business goals and objectives. Likewise, the legal function has invested significant resources in achieving a simplification of processes and tools, as well as improving training and resources available to individual lawyers. As the legal department provides support to the company across multiple jurisdictions, achieving strong compliance capabilities has also been key for the legal team, enabling De Los Rios and his colleagues to promptly respond to situations that may cause disruptions to the business. Another significant area of achievement for Unilever’s legal team has been fostering a close partnership with senior management, closely following the corporate business agenda and designing legal strategy to achieve business goals. ‘In Unilever we perceive the legal function as a tool necessary for reaching the goals’, De Los Rios explains. ‘So, for example, the legal function often conducts reviews of business practices (i.e. Distribution) to identify opportunities for improvement which may result in better business performance’. During the last few years the team supported the implementation of new initiatives related to sales and distribution procurement and the company’s manufacturing activities which have resulted in more efficient activities and in a reduction of costs. The department also has responsibility for important corporate projects – for example, this year alone has seen the team complete the sale of the soya and beverages brand Ades to Coca-Cola and the acquisition of the home and personal care business of the Latin American company Quala. The latter acquisition covers nine countries in the region and has a value of $1.2bn. Having made significant progress on the business agenda related to sustainability, the team now prides itself on its culture of doing the business ‘the right way’, and has encouraged the rest of the company to think in the same way.
