Bio

Luz Elena has spent over two decades navigating the legal and business complexities of film and television production across Latin America and the international market. Currently serving as Director of Business Affairs at Sony Pictures Entertainment in Bogotá, she plays a key role in supporting the company’s production operations across the region. Her portfolio spans both scripted and unscripted content, and she provides end-to-end legal and business guidance – from development through postproduction.

At Sony Pictures Television, Luz Elena is responsible for negotiating and managing complex agreements involving writers, directors, actors, production crews, and third-party providers. She also oversees format acquisitions, music licensing, and ensures compliance with both Colombian and U.S. legal frameworks. Her strategic insight has contributed to the smooth execution of a wide range of productions, including “Yo No Soy Mendoza,” “Enloqueciendo Contigo,” “Rosario Tijeras 4,” and “Shark Tank.”

Trained as a lawyer in Colombia, Luz Elena’s legal career began in-house at Caracol Televisión, one of the leading broadcasters in Latin America. There, she developed a strong foundation in intellectual property, corporate law, and complex contract negotiation. She later served as legal counsel for several prominent production companies and co-founded LEG-AL Asociados, a boutique firm advising film producers, e-commerce platforms, and startups. In that role, she advised clients such as Dynamo Producciones on major international projects, including “American Made,” “Gemini Man,” “Distrito Salvaje,” and “Narcos.”

Before joining Sony Pictures, Luz Elena served as Chief Operating Officer at Alibi Films, where she expanded her leadership experience in multi-country productions. Her work there included managing operations, optimising workflows, and leveraging Colombian tax incentives for television and film projects.

Known for her ability to bridge legal, operational, and creative disciplines, Luz Elena has carved out a niche at the intersection of business strategy and content production. She plays a key role in structuring projects to benefit from Colombia’s production incentives, including the cash rebate and the CINA tax certificate programs. Her collaborative approach ensures that legal and financial structures align with production goals and regional compliance requirements.

Luz Elena holds a law degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, a specialisation in International Business and Capital Markets from Universidad Externado de Colombia, and a Certificate in Administration and Management from Harvard University. Her educational and professional journey reflects her international outlook, multidisciplinary expertise, and deep commitment to the evolution of the Latin American audiovisual industry.
