How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

I am convinced that, as a corporate lawyer, regardless of the industry in which we operate, the reality of our profession is that we are always exposed to periods of stability or crisis. We are accustomed to facing legal, operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational crises; however, what makes the difference in successfully navigating these types of situations is having clearly defined risk matrices that allow us to proactively map the types of risks the organisation is exposed to, the probability of occurrence, and their impact on operations. These corporate risk analysis and risk mitigation plans should be executed collaboratively between legal teams and business areas. Working in this manner allows them to be known and internalised by the teams, which means that in the event of a crisis situation, the organisation is prepared, able to anticipate and act in an organised and effective manner. This generates resilience in the teams, so that they will not be paralysed by the situation, but on the contrary, have a clear understanding of the risk. Their mitigation plans will allow them to move forward even by taking advantage of the situation and capitalising on the experience.

What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?

Working for a company where science and innovation are fundamental to achieving corporate goals, it is necessary for a lawyer to not only focus on legal aspects, but also to understand the products and its benefits to be an active part of the business strategy. This year, I feel very proud to have been selected as the single point of contact for a specific global innovative asset. The role is relevant as it serves as the bridge between the legal global structure leading the strategy and all the lawyers in the company’s different operational units around the world. This allows my colleagues to have first-hand access not only to the legal strategy, but also to the science behind the asset/product.

What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?

Working for a multinational where innovation and technology are the fundamental pillars, what I have experienced in my company, and in the legal area, as having the most significant impact are projects that involve artificial intelligence to create chatbots for quick consultation and response. These enable the business, as the primary user of its service, to have a fast and positively impactful experience. Another is contract management cycle programs, automating the contracts and generating standardised templates that allow for more efficient and faster processes.
